ELT treatment
Most of the ELT treatment is not clear of contradictory, therefore for most of the years in scope the values are depicted as “unknown”.

Major changes in legislation/policy since 2016
In 2017, the Department for Environmental Affairs – now the Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment (DFFE) – took control of all waste tire operations.1 Before this was done by REDISA.
Barriers and challenges
There is limited and inconsistent data on waste tires in South Africa, due to confidentiality and varying record-keeping practices, highlight the need for a national audit.² Generally the gap between tire production and collection represent waste tires that are unaccounted for by DFFE, classified as either landfilled, piled, or of unknown disposition.
