GENEVA, 6 October 2026 – The Tire Industry Project (TIP) today announced the appointment of Dr Willie Peijnenburg to its external Assurance Group (AG), a committee of independent experts that guides TIP’s research programs.
Dr Peijnenburg is Professor of Environmental Toxicology and Biodiversity at Leiden University, Netherlands, and a Senior Researcher at the Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM). His work focuses on understanding the fate and effects of chemicals and emerging contaminants in the environment, with expertise in ecotoxicology, biodiversity, environmental risk assessment and predictive modelling. He also brings extensive experience in translating scientific knowledge into policy recommendations and sustainability frameworks.
He joins five other independent experts and practitioners in the AG, whose collective expertise helps TIP challenge assumptions, ask critical questions and promote rigorous, evidence-based scientific practice.
Dr Peijnenburg said: “Questions around environmental emissions, chemical safety and the sustainability of mobility systems are becoming increasingly important. I was drawn to TIP’s Assurance Group by the opportunity to contribute to conversations that have real-world relevance. I look forward to working with fellow Assurance Group members to support robust, transparent science and evidence-based decision-making.”
TIP also extended its gratitude to Dr John “Jack” Spengler (Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health, US) and Dr Iseult Lynch (School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences, University of Birmingham, UK), who are departing from the AG, having made important contributions to the quality and credibility of TIP’s work. Dr Spengler, one of the founding members of the AG, is particularly recognized for his strategic guidance and sustained leadership, which have been instrumental in shaping the group’s role and evolution over the years.
