ELT treatment
- Similarly, a reduction in material recovery and energy recovery can be observed, with some exceptions for a rise in energy recovery from 2021 to 2022. Specifically, material recovery went down by ~11% per year (ELT arising only -4% per year), almost halving in 2023 relative to 2019. That was due to rising electricity costs made it harder for material recyclers to compete with the cement industry.
- In 2023, about a fourth of the ELT arising is within the category “unknown”. This is the first time since data collection began in Germany that such a large volume of information has been reported as unknown. The Wirtschaftsverband der deutschen Kautschukindustrie e.V. (wdk) assumes this involves exports to third countries. However, this is not supported by export statistics. Hence, it could be due to a lobbying strategy.
