Impacts on health and on the environment
Before 2022, mining tires were buried despite bans. ELTs are granulated or shredded for reuse. Many outdated pyrolysis plants produce fuel oil and carbon black. ELTs serve cement and fertilizer factories; fertilizer use is unclear. They fuel kilns, causing odors and remote placement. Jawa lacks permanent ELT landfills, using temporary storage for export. Burning ELTs is rare due to pollution complaints.1
