IN 2010, TIP sponsored publication of the first of a growing body of TIP-sponsored peer reviewed scientific studies focused on tire and road wear particles (TRWP).

There is much still to be understood about TRWP. Mindful of this, TIP is committed to continued research toward closing knowledge gaps.

TIP supported publication of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) report Nanotechnology and Tyres: Greening Industry and Transport.

New nanomaterials offer promising avenues for future innovation, which can contribute towards the sustainability and resource efficiency of the tire industry. This report considers how to address any potential environmental health and safety (EHS) risks toward the sustainable use of nanotechnology in tires.

TIP published its first annual environmental key performance indicators (KPIs) report. This and the continued series of KPI reports provide a common set of measurements that can be used to assist individual company efforts to improve tire manufacturing environmental performance.

TIP continues to track and publish the environmental performance of members’ manufacturing operation.

TIP coordinated the publication of the first Product Category Rules (PCR), for preparing an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for tires.

A first of its kind, the PCR is technically comprehensive, global in scope, and enables consistency in evaluation of the potential environmental impacts of tires.

Launch of the TIP-initiated Global Platform for Sustainable Natural Rubber (GPSNR). The GPSNR is a stakeholder-driven platform that aims to drive sustainability in the natural rubber value chain.

TIP, collaborating with stakeholders, works with the GPSNR to enhance the socio-economic and environmental aspects of the natural rubber value chain.

By harmonizing standards, promoting supply chain transparency, and encouraging sustainable practices, TIP aims to foster fair trade and responsible sourcing.

We began working on tire particles in 2005 to help answer questions that TIP members were asking about the fate and potential human health and environmental impacts of the particles generated during driving. There were no existing data to help answer these questions, so we established a TRWP working group that continues its work today.

Responding to increased interest in this field, in 2019 we launched a website dedicated to sharing access to the studies that we have sponsored. To ensure wide access to scientific resources, TIP-sponsored research papers are available free of charge.

TIP coordinated tire-sector contribution to the OECD report on approaches for more sustainable nanomaterials and nano-enabled products.

The report proposes the combination of Safe(r)-by-Design and relevant regulatory strategies for awareness raising and decision making to achieve a Safe(r) Innovation Approach. Accordingly, it supports industrial initiatives in adopting a Safe(r) Innovation Approach with descriptors for a Safe(r) Innovation Approach for NMs and nano-enabled products.

The Roadmap offers a framework for action that outlines impactful pathways for the entire sector to contribute to the ambitions of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

TIP unveiled an enhanced mission, to anticipate, understand, and address global environmental, social, and governance (ESG) issues relevant to the tire industry and its value chain. And, to bolster executive oversight, TIP’s governance structure was updated to include the position of a fourth Co-Chair company.

Built upon the pillars of research, action and engagement, and communication, the updated organizational structure and work program complements TIP’s sustainability-driven program of scientific research and other projects with enhanced action, stakeholder engagement and communication across a suite of ongoing and new projects.
